[ENG] In this extraordinary year, performing on stage becomes – now more than ever – an act of resistance. In order to ensure music remains alive and well, Echoes with Jehnny Beth has opted for a studio format that addresses the temporary distance currently imposed on live audiences. The artists now perform in isolation and, in a way, their songs resonate even more compellingly against the empty backdrop of the set. The poetic-rebel tones of Irish band Fontaines DC, the emotion heightened by the human dimension of Emel Mathlouthi’s lyrics, or the musical combat of the one-woman band that is Billy Nomates, seem to call for introspection. This fourth edition of Echoes presents artists who are exponents of very different genres in an unusual setting, and yet, in a world where distance is now the rule, their music is more interconnected than ever thanks to the thread of emotion that weaves through their spirit of rebellion, their feminism… and their ability to say no. Tonight in the Echoes cube, the strains of Emel’s voice as she sings her Arabic songs of justice, the English musical boxing of Billy Nomates and the desperately romantic tones of Fontaine DC call to each other across a space seemingly conjured out of nowhere and, for an hour, seem to make sense of our suspended lives…

[FR] En cette année si particulière, plus que jamais, se produire sur scène devient un acte de résistance. Pour maintenir une musique vivante, Echoes with Jehnny Beth s’est adapté et propose d’affronter l’éloignement provisoire du public avec une formule en studio. Cette fois les artistes sont seuls et d’une certaine façon leurs titres résonnent encore plus dans le décor vide de l’émission. L’accent poético-rebelle des Irlandais de Fontaines DC, l’émotion démultipliée par la portée humaine des mots de Emel Mathlouthi, ou le combat musical de Billy Nomates, artiste féminine solitaire, semblent justement appeler à une introspection. Ainsi, ce quatrième numéro d’Echoes présente des artistes aux genres très éloignés, dans un dispositif inhabituel et pourtant, dans notre monde où l’éloignement est la règle, leurs musiques se retrouvent plus que jamais liées par le pacte d’une émotion tissée autour de leur rébellion, de leur féminisme… et de leur pouvoir de dire : non.

Ce soir, dans le cube d’Echoes la voix tendue de justesse du chant arabe d’Emel, la boxe musicale anglaise de Billy Nomates et le désespoir romantique de Fontaine DC se répondent dans un espace de nulle part et, durant une heure, semblent donner un sens à notre période suspendue…
